Use Advanced Search to:

Find connections to follow: Twitter advanced search makes it easy to find the right people to follow, in the right areas, and at the right time, in hopes of them following you back. Regardless, it’s always a good idea to follow your target market.

We can do so by inserting keywords into the Words Section as well as relevant hashtags into the specific search fields.

To broaden the search even more you can use the People Section to include users who mention a specific industry related Twitter handle.

Performing the search, Twitter will populate a stream of users including their tweets giving you the opportunity to choose those you would like to follow.

Find relevant conversations: Engaging in conversations taking place regarding your industry is not only great for building brand awareness, but also showcasing your industry knowledge to network or attract new followers.

Now this is where you’d use the Places, Dates and Sentiment Sections to narrow in on relevant conversations.

Find prospects and create leads: One of the best ways to find prospects for your business is to find users who are asking questions containing your keywords or phrases that you could provide answers to.

A good way to start this form of advanced search is to first use the “Exact Phrase” search field, “Any of these words” field, which would be your keywords, and finally, scroll down to the “other” option and select Question.

This search will then generate users questions that you can then scan to see if you could provide them an answer.

While I wouldn’t recommend pitching your services right away, providing a valuable answer and being seen as a resource could prompt the user to start initiating conversation with your business to build trust that may ultimately lead into a sale.

Bonus: Use Advanced Search Against Your Competition

Use Twitter advanced search to find tweets mentioning your competitor that are questions or with negative sentiment. If they’re being ignored, it’s a great opportunity to introduce yourself.

Yeah….powerful stuff!

Takeaway

As Twitter Advanced Search is tucked away and not initially noticeable when performing a basic search, I feel many marketers have no idea this option exists.

Remember that this tool is only as useful as you make it.

The more refined you make your search the better and the ability to exclude certain words from tweets will filter out unnecessary noise, especially during events, conferences, or holidays.

What are some other ways to use Twitter Advanced Search that I missed? How else can you use this feature to your advantage? Let me know in the comments below and make sure to come back next week for more social media tutorials.

This week’s #SocialMediaMinute will cover how to schedule tweets with images using Twitter.

If you’ve ever tried to schedule tweets with images using a service like Hootsuite you probably know that the photo is included as a URL instead of within Twitter’s stream.

This can drastically decrease the engagement your tweets with images receive and additionally they are not archived in your profile’s photos and videos section.

You can however, schedule tweets with images using Twitter. Here’s how!

What’s the BIG Difference?

In stream images: Images that appear in a users’ Twitter feed can be useful for catching their attention and stimulating retweets and favorites.

If you are including images, make sure that they’re quality, and big enough to fill the space. In stream images will also add color to your brand’s twitter stream and can be utilized to break up constant link or text based content.

Photos and videos archive: Twitter users will typically search through your Twitter profile’s photos and videos archive to learn more about you.

The problem is when you schedule tweets with images using a third-party app, the images are not stored in this archive, essentially reducing their shelf life and future interactions they may receive.

Why Schedule Tweets with Images?

Your Twitter posting frequency shouldn’t just be from 9 to 5 and only on work days. To grow your following and reach new users scheduling your content throughout the week and at different times is a great strategy, especially if you want to reach users in different time zones.

While I wouldn’t recommend including images in every scheduled tweet, you should still use graphics and images attached to your tweets to add some color to your stream and tweets with images do receive higher engagement rates.

Takeaway

Remember that scheduling tweets with images is only part of the equation. You’ll also need to include engaging copy that’s relevant to the image and to your audience.

While I wouldn’t count Hootsuite or Buffer out for scheduling tweets with or without links, if you want to make the most of the graphic space available to you, scheduling image tweets specifically using twitter is a good idea.

What’s your Twitter strategy? Do you schedule your content and do you find tweets with images more engaging? Let me know in the comments below and make sure to come back next week for more social media tutorials.

This social media tutorial will cover Twitter and adding a new Header Image to your profile.

Twitter recently released Enhanced Profiles in an effort to provide it’s users an engaging experience. Much like Facebook’s Timeline, Twitter emphasizes brands telling their story and showcasing what makes them unique.

The process of uploading a new Twitter Header Image is fairly simple, and can be located in your Settings options. You are also given the ability to scale your uploaded image using a convenient built in slider allowing you to preview what your header image will look like before you save the changes.

This gives brands more flexibility in choosing the best graphical representation for their Twitter page. After all, a shoddy first impression could be the difference between a new follower or page bounce.

Final Thoughts

More and more social platforms are incorporating this form of storytelling through graphic displays on their home pages. It’s up to brands to take advantage of this opportunity and promote a consistent image across all online networks.

I especially enjoyed the native editing features but I think it would be interesting to allow users to add image filters the same way Instagram does. What was your first impression of the update and have you uploaded your header yet?

In this social media tutorial I’m going to quickly go over Twitter Discover.

If used correctly, your Twitter following is one of the best places to find the most recent trending headlines.

Twitter Discover delivers tailored content with an emphasis on the tweets that are popular among the people you follow and their friends.

So let’s take a look at the discover tab.

Once you’ve logged into your twitter account, you’ll notice in the upper left corner the discover tab. Look for the #Discover.

Once logged into your twitter account, you’ll notice in the upper left corner the discover tab.

After selecting the Discover tab, the first thing you will see is a list of the most popular STORIES your connections are talking about.

Twitter Discover Functions:

  • STORIES is a great place to find current news and teachings regarding your industry assuming you follow the right people. Through the Discover tab you can View the original Tweet associated with the story, and either there I can reply, Retweet or Favorite it.
  • ACTIVITY showcases recent follows, favorites, and list additions from those in my Network. This feature makes it very easy for me to see who my followers are engaging with or the type of content they are favoring.
  • WHO TO FOLLOW is pretty self explanatory here and suggests Twitter accounts based on who you follow and more. You can also locate specific Twitter users using the search field as well.
  • FIND FRIENDS is great for those who are just setting up their accounts. Meaning you can search or invite your contacts by email. Note that if you are using this feature to search for contacts You’ll only find users who have allowed their accounts to be found by email address.
  • BROWSE CATEGORIES lists the most popular topics and top influencers across twitter. For example by selecting the Entertainment topic we can see numerous verified Twitter accounts of influential mainstream actors and comedians.
  • TRENDS can also be managed through the discover tab and detail popular keywords or hashtags that are trending on twitter. By default these current trends are based on promoted tweets and what Twitter feels is relevant to me.

So what does this all mean?

There’s no telling what Twitter has planned for the future of this Discover function, however the current use of the tool makes for a more personalized experience with highlighted content that is more relevant to the individual user.
